Stevens Johnson Syndrome Awareness Month

Once again this year the month of August has been designated as Stevens Johnson Syndrome Awareness Month. Stevens Johnson Syndrome, or (SJS) as it is more commonly known, is a debilitating allergic reaction that occurs without notice or warning in response to a dangerous drug or prescription medication. Commonly caused by various antibiotics, sulfa medications and anti seizure medications among many others, Stevens Johnson Syndrome affects thousands of patients each year and changes lives forever in the process.

Asher McGirt And His Battle With Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Asher McGirt, a young sixth grader from Raleigh, North Carolina, is currently fighting for his life and dealing with the debilitating effects of Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS). Stevens Johnson syndrome is a debilitating and often deadly drug induced allergic reaction that causes one's skin to peel off in sheets and give the appearance that one was thrown into a very hot fire. Stevens Johnson syndrome's overall effects can be devastating and even cause one's premature death in up to 30% of those who develop it.

Those afflicted with Stevens Johnson Syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis can unequivocally tell you the reactions, usually caused by a defective drug, are nothing to joke about. The often deadly skin reaction that develops a short period after ingesting a new drug causes the body to burn from the inside out leaving those who are lucky enough to survive it with permanent scarring, disabilities and other serious health related issues. In times of such struggle and strife many client's of ours have told me they initially did not think they were ever going to make it though the ordeal.

Because most people have no idea they are allergic to certain drugs until a reaction occurs it is often very difficult to predict who will suffer from a Stevens Johnson Syndrome or Toxic epidermal necrolysis reaction. Anyone who has ever heard of Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) already knows the devastating effects the allergic reactions can have both on a friend and/or loved one. One of the most recent illustrations of its effects are shown through Yolanda Stewart's recent bout with TEN after suffering a reaction to the antibiotic she wastaking. Stewart was started on the antibiotic for a urinary tract infection and began experiencing bumpy blackened skin that started peeling off her body during its use. Stewart's condition quickly evolved into Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.

Permanent Injuries From SJS or TENS

Complications from TEN/SJS can include: permanent blindness, dry-eye syndrome, photophobia, lung damage, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, permanent loss of nail beds, scarring of the esophagus and other mucous membranes, arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Many patients pores scar shut, causing them to retain heat. These are just some of the side-effects that have been reported.
