Once again this year the month of August has been designated as Stevens Johnson Syndrome Awareness Month. Stevens Johnson Syndrome, or (SJS) as it is more commonly known, is a debilitating allergic reaction that occurs without notice or warning in response to a dangerous drug or prescription medication. Commonly caused by various antibiotics, sulfa medications and anti seizure medications among many others, Stevens Johnson Syndrome affects thousands of patients each year and changes lives forever in the process.

In a proclamation from Governor Ritter of Colorado, SJS is recognized as a severe adverse reaction to common drugs affecting more than two million Americans each year and resulting in more than 140,000 deaths. Thus far, the state of Colorado has been joined by Arizona, Alabama, Connecticut and Tennessee in recognizing SJS Awareness Month.

More attention and awareness needs to be achieved in order to reduce and prevent the horrendous effects SJS causes each year. Knowing what to look for and the warning signs of a Stevens Johnson Syndrome reaction is crucial in controlling the often deadly reaction and syndrome. For those that do survive the ordeal, education and support play a large part in the long term recovery process. The acknowledgement of August as SJS Awareness Month helps foster such needs and unquestionably is a great stride in the right direction.
